Fall and Spring Inspection at Pacific Highway Auto Repair

Good vehicle care for us San Diego residents has always meant taking our vehicles in every spring and fall for a check-up. Vehicles needed routine maintenance to prepare them for the changes in weather. Today's vehicles aren't quite as sensitive to seasonal changes. Older vehicles required different weights of oil for summer and winter. But today's engines can run on the same oil all year. Both the engines and the oils have been improved.Antifreeze—or coolant as it's also called—protects the engine from both freezing and hot temperatures and thus is required by the engine year-round. Modern coolants don't have to be changed as often as they did in the past, but your owner's manual has a recommendation for when it should be replaced to extend cooling system life.Getting a spring and fall checkup at Pacific Highway Auto Repair in San Diego for your vehicle is still good auto advice.First of all, there is a lot of preventive auto maintenance inv ... read more

Keep Your Cool in San Diego: Air Conditioning Services

Most San Diego drivers don't even think about their air conditioner. Now here's a tip for San Diego vehicle owners: Run your air conditioner every so often during CA winters. This circulates the lubricant to help keep the seals from drying out. The air conditioner actually removes some of the moisture in the air. So if you have trouble with fogging on your vehicle windshield during CA winters or during a rain storm, running the A/C on the defrost setting should help. Now on some San Diego cars you can't run the A/C at the same time as the defroster. Don't ask me why, but I suspect lawyers were involved. Also, air and water can get into the A/C system. That can reduce the efficiency of the system and also lead to corrosion that causes damage. San Diego drivers should periodically purge the system and replace the refrigerant to remove the air and water.CA drivers would be wise to ... read more

San Diego Drivers: Is It Time to Replace Your PCV Valve?

San Diego Drivers: Is It Time to Replace Your PCV Valve?

The crankcase is the lower part of the engine where the crankshaft is housed and where the engine oil lives. The crankshaft is connected to the pistons that power the engine. When you are diving around San Diego, fuel is burned in your vehicle engine, it pushes the pistons down and the crankshaft rotates and sends power to the transmission. Some of the explosive gases from combustion squeeze past the pistons and down into the crankcase. Now this gas is about 70% unburned fuel. If it were allowed to remain in the crankcase, it would contaminate the oil and quickly turn it to sludge. Sludge is like Vaseline and clogs passages in the engine, leading to damage. Also, the pressure build up would blow out seals and gaskets. So in the old days, there was just a hose that vented the crankcase out into the air. Obviously, not good for our air quality in San Diego, CA.Enter the PCV valve. It's a small, one-way valve that lets out the gases from the crankcase and routes them back into th ... read more

Pacific Highway Auto Repair: Why Replace Your Engine Air Filter?

Just as our bodies need clean air to function properly, your vehicle engine needs clean air to operate efficiently. Let's go egghead for a minute. For every gallon of gas we burn driving on San Diego streets, 20 pounds of carbon dioxide comes out the tailpipe. Question: how can a gallon of gas that weighs a little over six pounds produce 20 pounds of carbon dioxide? The answer is that the carbon comes from the gasoline, but the oxygen comes from the air. You see, it takes about 12,000 gallons of air to burn a gallon of gas in your engine. Clearly, your vehicle needs a lot of air to keep going in San Diego. A lot of clean air is best. You've seen the pictures of people in Japan wearing face masks. They want some kind of filter to keep unwanted pollution and germs out of their lungs. Well, your vehicle also works better when its internals are clean. When your vehicle air filter is ... read more
